Bulawayo memories

Posted by shonatiger

Chatting with an 81 year old this morning about his memories of Bulawayo in the old days...\

He remembers City Hall as a corrugated iron building, and all the roads in the city were untarred (Main Street was the first to get tar). Highfield Pharmacy is the oldest pharmacy, and he remembers a Market Square near the City Hall, where you could buy anything - "even wardrobes".

Also, he remembers when Stanley Square was built, and he remembers going there to watch bioscopes. He was born on Greenspan Farm (where West Park Cemetery is now), and there was nothing there then. Later, Mpilo Hospital was built in the middle of the bush. He also remembers a mule - drawn cart taking the dead to Luveve Cemetery, with people following behind.

So cool!  I wish he had pictures!

PS. I'll be looking up the history of Bulawayo to verify if he's old enough to remember those things :)
